Hi5 First Chapters that Hooked Me

meme hosted by Cara @Chasing Words, Anne @Potter, Percy and I and Nomes@Inkcrush

This weeks topic: First chapters that had you hooked.

Something Maybe by Elizabeth Scott
You can read the first chapter here

How can you not fall for a book whose first line is Everyone’s seen my mother naked. This was my first Elizabeth Scott book and it had me at that line. Plus it just gets better.

Saving Francesca by Melina Marchatta
You can read the first chapter here

I fell in love with Francesca’s voice from page one? One of my all time favourite books.

The Demon’s Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan
You can read the first chapter here

Such a fabulous first chapter, swords under the sink, guns, knives, raven attacks and Nick and Alan’s banter. How could you not be hooked?

The Mockingbirds by Daisy Whitney
You can’t read the first chapter, sorry. I know it’s mean to include it, but this is such an amazing first chapter I had too. I read it and couldn’t out it down.

The Year of Secret Assignments by Jaclyn Moriarty
You can read the first chapter here

Can you tell I have a new favourite author? I think she’s made it into my last five posts. Anyway this book is brilliant and hooked me straight away. As did The Ghosts of Ashbury High, and as I’m sure her other books will.

  2. There are so many first chapters that grab my attention. It continues to thrill me that I can find books who drag me in right from the first pages. I recently finished Hex Hall & Shiver and thought they both did a good job at this!

  3. Nomes – Oh Perfect You! I LOVE that book. I read it about ten times when I was pregnant.

Definitely similar tastes, so you should like The Mockingbirds 🙂

Jemi – Oh Shiver I adoed that book so much. I <3 Grace&Sam. Hex Hall is so fabulously funny too, Sophie has a great voice!

  4. I love the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone…er, Philosopher's Stone. Sorry, my British friend. The very title of the chapter is the BEST EVER. "The Boy Who Lived." So great.

I recently fell in love with The Death-Defying Pepper Roux from the first chapter. Pepper is an awesome kid.

Last night, I fell in love with Jaclyn Dolamore's Magic Under Glass. Here are the first three sentences: "The audience didn't understand a word we sang. They came to see our legs. As the posters said, 'Trouser Girls from the Exotic Land of Tassim!'" SUCH a great story. I read it in one sitting.

I also love Patrick Rothfuss's Name of the Wind. The first chapter is so dang bizarre and intense that you have to keep reading! All 700 or so pages of it! This is older YA or adult fiction.

Finally, another adult novel (though so slickery clean, anyone of any age could read it): Shannon Hale's Austenland. You'll laugh so hard from the DEDICATION PAGE! It's dedicated to Colin Firth! You just have to read it to find out why. 🙂

Fun, fun post, Alexa!!! I always love to hear your thoughts on books.
